POSSIBLE SPOILERS AHEAD!
When I first began reading this series, I'll admit, I thought it would be the same sterotypical vampire story that so many other authors had been producing. So imagine my surprise when I found that Mead had written her own unique spin on vampires, her take on vampires was something I hadn't ever set my eyes on before and I immediately fell in love with the series. Every book in the series has been leading up to the Last Sacrifice, so naturally there was huge expectations to fill when it came to this book, and oh boy did it live up to them!
Last Sacrifice starts off where Spirit Bound left off, with Rose awaiting execution for the wrongful accusation of the vampire Queen Tatiana's murder. Rose never gets to face her trial however as her friends bust her out of prison and send her to a safe and isolated location, using the chaos in the Moroi population to their advantage. Things don't go quite to plan for Rose's rescue team however, having forgotten just how stubborn she is and the fact that she can't sit back and watch things happen. Dimitri, Sydney and Rose take on the task of finding Lissa's illegitimate sibling, while in the meantime they run from Guardians, turn Sonya Karp back into a Moroi, discover a weird colony composed of Moroi and humans, and find a rekindled romance between Dimitri and Rose. Back at the courts, Lissa and the rest of Rose's friends spend all their time trying to find who really killed the Queen and doing everything they can to cause distractions.
From the very beginning of this book there was plenty of action and definitely plenty of suspense, enough for me to not want to stop reading until I had finished. Things were never slow or boring, there was always a steady rythmn and plenty of twists and turns to shock and surprise. The only thing I was dissapointed about was the lack of romance throughout the book, there wasn't enough to really make it as captivating as it was in the previous books. Also, I wasn't happy with the way Rose treated Adrian, but i'm glad that she finally chose who she wanted to be with, her decision was strong and solid this time round. The ending to Last Sacrifice was superb, wrapping up the series on a high note, with most of the characters content and happy and myself as a reader was also feeling the same, but there was still some things left for me to question and contemplate as to what could have happened in the future.
Overall, this book was purely brilliance! Mead is one of very few writers that can weave so many twists into one book and have you biting your lip in anticipation as you read. This book is a perfect example of Mead at her best! Her spin-off series of this one, Bloodlines, will be released soon and will focus on on of the minor characters but will still involve Rose and the gang, a series that sounds like something to look forward to! Another thing to look forward to is the possibility of a movie! Though nothing has been confirmed, fans of the series can only hope something will come of it soon :)
